RENEW...

GET TO KNOW US...

•BLACK HISTORY MONTH• ETERNAL - BLACK MAKEUP ARTISTS throughout the modern history of this craft have contributed countless masterpieces to every segment of the industry. Print, television, fashion, film, stage...

I AM BLACK! My love for my industry AS A WHOLE, has caused me to crave all of the knowledge & every detail I am able to adsorb & retain about MAKEUP ART. It is through love that I have sought to know, and know well - as many of my colleagues, pioneers, creators, geniuses and masters of this craft that I deeply & wholly love...MAKEUP.

All of this said to say, IT HURTS when I discover that my colleagues, my fellow beauty professionals of different skin shades and ethnicities DO NOT KNOW OF MAKEUP ARTISTS OF COLOR; whose talent, vision & sheer genius are as much a part of that "whole" that I speak of as every artist that has given to this great body. We feel ignored, IT FEELS RACIST, though I do know that most of my fellow creatives ARE NOT that way - IT STILL FEELS LIKE IT!

INDIFFERENCE feels like purpose & aggression. It is heartbreaking at times.

We are black; we know & embrace all of the intricacies within the Anglo-European beauty realm. We yet honor the mastery that EXCLUDES US (people of color) again & again, in so many ways, in so many areas - still, in 2013.

We are more than worthy; make an effort to GET TO KNOW SOME OF US...this is just a fraction, a snapshot, a glimpse. Our greatness is immense - we know you...GET TO KNOW US!

NEW MAKEUP ARTIST PHOTO SHOOT CHECKLIST

§_____________________________________________________________________________________§

Are you a new MUA & have questions about what is expected of you on photo shoots? Experience is your best teacher whether it comes through assisting more seasoned artists or doing lots of shooting on your own. There are a lot of details to be mindful of as you pursue building your body of work & portfolio, honing your craft & establishing yourself as a Makeup Artist. Here is a bit of information that may help you along the way.

NUMBER ONE:  Upon booking the shoot, establish lines of communication between yourself & EVERY MEMBER OF THE CREATIVE TEAM. You want to have the confidence that you know how to approach the execution of the makeup looks with COMPLETE CLARITY ON THE CREATIVE DIRECTION. Ask questions, ask for images, ask to see the talent, model/models & every person you will be working on. Find out about their skin & hair. Go in with as much information as possible.

NIGHT BEFORE:

---Bookmark images of makeup looks that may go with the direction of the shoot. You want to get a clear picture of the whole creative team's goals.
---Pack: Your own lighting. Oil sheen spray in case the looks call for glistening skin on the face & body. Makeup remover wipes to transition between looks & prep the skin.
---Go over in your head, then write a few notes on the different textures, finishes & over-all features of different styles of makeup. (Beauty, Clean Beauty, Fashion, Pin-Up, Urban, Lingerie, Natural, Nude, Neutral, Monotone, Basic Commercial, Goth, Grunge, Heroin Chic, Avant Garde, Fantasy, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50, 60s, 70s, 80s etc)
---Weigh these points with the contents of your kit. Be ready to expand your product knowledge by using products in multiplicity. (Pencils, pigments as lip color, mixing pigments & loose powders with cream/liq foundation to come up with new textures/colors for highlighting/contouring/cheek colors etc)

AT THE SHOOT:

---Be clear on how many looks you will be executing so that you can manage your progress. You may decide to transition from one look to another or start from scratch between looks. You want to be able to map that out.
---Find out how much time you may have to execute each look so that you can pace yourself.
---Speak to each person on the creative team. Ask if there are any images that they want you to see. Make sure you are on the same page they are.
---Ask photographer about the specifics of the lighting that you should know. (Intensity, natural, filtered, up, direct, reflected, silhouette etc)
---Be mindful of your pace so that you can allot a few moments to make adjustments on set in actual lighting conditions.
---Ask photographer to let you see frames during the shoot so you can see how your work is coming across.
---Gage progress of the shoot by asking members of the team:
Any adjustments? Softer eyes? More dramatic eyes/lips? Softer/heavier brows? More highlighting? More facial sculpting?

Be confident that you are an equal member of a team, yet RESPECTING THE INHERENT HIERARCHY & go in there positive that you will give your best!
R O C K . I T . O U T!!! :-)

Sincerely,
JENNIFER JAMES BEAUTY

★ GRASP THE MASTERY...the blog post.

GRASP THE MASTERY IS A MAKEUP ARTIST CENTERED MASTER CLASS IN  THE FORM OF TWEETS.
To actually "grasp the mastery" beyond 140 characters (or less), take each tweet & create a 10 bullet point (or more) summary of how you can apply the crux of it to your technique. Then expound on & study your 10 points for deeper exploration;  keep in mind that your bullet points are to serve as a road map to more comprehensive study. Implement as many research materials as possible - including classes, makeup workshops, seminars, makeup books, books on fine art, articles related to the cosmetics industry, images of the industry from a historical perspective & study of related industries. (photography, lighting, costuming, story boarding, cosmetics chemistry...

Example:
#GraspTheMastery #19: The beauty of skin is in its texture & hue. Retain its true essence w/ makeup.

1) Skin types, textures, condition, care treatment.
2) Skin preparation based on skin type.
3) Skin preparation based on skin texture, conditions.
4) Skin texture - how to mimic skin health w/ makeup.
5) Skin texture - how to enhance undertones with color products.
6) Makeup elements - Create the look of healthier skin w/ color theory.
7) Makeup elements - Use color products for correcting severe blemishes, scars & discoloration
8) Makeup elements - Study of lighting elements for best skin in controlled environments (Photography, Film)
9) Cosmetics chemistry technology & innovations for healthy skin.
10) Esthetics & Dermatology - Where makeup fits into the equation.

You get the idea! Begin the journey, if you dare!
  • #GraspTheMastery: Take what you already know. Study timeless, iconic images. Do a step by step breakdown of possible technique.
#GraspTheMastery: The breakdown? Products. Tools. Aspects of #colortheory. Facial anatomy. Attention to detail.
#GraspTheMastery: Pinpoint what's different about your work & work you greatly admire. Look for what you're missing.
#GraspTheMastery: Figure out if your perception is in line w/ an established aesthetic or comfort zone of your skill.
#GraspTheMastery: Color Wheel. Memorize every word & concept printed on it & GET YOUR KIT & ACT THEM OUT! #Colortheory
#GraspTheMastery: See parallels EVERYWHERE! Corpse on CSI=facial anatomy. Fine Art Portraiture =highlights & contours.
#GraspTheMastery: Refine your technique to how mastery was achieved b4 primers, eye base & Photoshop were crutches.
#GraspTheMastery: Don't fear knowing & being judged on the difference between poor, mediocre, fair, good & excellent.
#GraspTheMastery: With expertise, go to your weak side first. Then match it using the strengths of your strong side.
#GraspTheMastery: Understand that the word ART in our title is something that bears responsibility to GLOBAL IDEALS.
#GraspTheMastery: If access to information has made you lazy - WAKE UP & STOP TAKING IT FOR GRANTED. #READ #Research
#GraspTheMastery: Part 11 - We finger paint b4 we learn math, writing & science.Study artistry math, writing & science.
#GraspTheMastery: Part 12 - Frame detailed stories 4 #makeup looks to encourage imagination & inspiration from within.
#GraspTheMastery: Part 13 - Mistakes-what we shd use 2 figure out who we are within the craft. Face them.Analyze them.
#GraspTheMastery: Part 14 - Bring innovation into your offerings. Observe your inspirations & add ur own contribution.
#GraspTheMastery: Part 15 - The masters are masters b/c their expertise has a signature. What's ur artistry signature?
#GraspTheMastery #16: Embrace the tedious. Times will come when inspiration from those moments surfaces as expertise.
#GraspTheMastery #17: TALENT is natural.SKILL is developed.BOTH can be fully realized w/ EDUCATION & HARD WORK.
#GraspTheMastery, #18 - #Artistry rooted in the basics has been/is the most successful formula to follow.
#GraspTheMastery #19: The beauty of skin is in its texture & hue. Retain its true essence w/ makeup.
#GraspTheMastery #20: Skin reflects & shows shadows. In it's simplest sense, makeup imitates this.
#GraspTheMastery #21: Ingredients. Manufacturing process. Physical properties of key components. Understand cosmetics.
#GraspTheMastery #22: Advanced skills matter even if you don't use them. Study Special FX makeup, you will be a better beauty artist.
    #GraspTheMastery #23: Don't trade congruity 4 precision.Over-zealous exactness turns art to #ColorByNumbers on a face.
#GraspTheMastery #24: Know relationship btwn #makeup & #photography.Tech advances in cam equipment demands the acumen.
#GraspTheMastery #25: Instinctual. Gutsy. Formulaic. Visual. Technical. Emotional. Impressionist. Anatomical. #KnowYourStyle. #ApplicationMethodology
#GraspTheMastery #26: YOU CAN & WILL learn from EVERY MUA you come in contact with. BE OPEN! #What2Do #WhatNot2Do
#GraspTheMastery #27: Restraint shd be an application philosophy.A tactic within the less is more strategy. #CocoChanel
#GraspTheMastery #28: Growth comes when we use industry aesthetic to critique our work not brag of our fierceness.
#GraspTheMastery #29: Benefit from all that it brings you & from THE JOURNEY itself. ARTISTRY is your prize - TAKE IT!
#GraspTheMastery #30: Buy a sketch pad.Hone the 'A' in MUA.Explore those recesses of your brain.Coax your inner artist.
    #GraspTheMastery #31: •Texture •Finish •Color Pay-off •Density •Viscosity •Mill Degree •Major inspiration in products.
#GraspTheMastery #32: Modify your assessment of what's *dated*. Figuratively at minimum - GET A PHD IN MAKEUP!
    #GraspTheMastery #33: Use products w/ treatment ingredients.Essential 2 application. #EyeCream #Primer
#GraspTheMastery #34: High Definition - .Cosmetics Chemistry .Lighting .Texture .Color .Transparency #HDtechniques
#GraspTheMastery #35: Make it a habit 2 observe other MUAs' masterpieces & formulate technique map & product breakdown.
#GraspTheMastery #36: Approach the craft w/ obsessive love, b able 2 express that love in poetry & prose.
#GraspTheMastery #37: #Brows should flow on a continuum dictated by the shape of upper hemisphere of the eye socket.
#GraspTheMastery #38: Precise & clean.Diffused & blended. Opposing principles as allies in pursuit of joint perfection.
    #GraspTheMastery #39: Makeup ARTIST - Foundation . Art History . Mixed Media . Illustration #AppliedEducation  #GetSome
#GraspTheMastery #40: In mastery of highlights/contours - HIGHLIGHT 1st so you can better judge depth of contour.
#41: SEE the potential for expertise in EVERY aspect, not just eyes.
#GraspTheMastery #42: Think of individual products in your kit as embodiments of  texture not just color. #MakeupMonday #MakeupChat

DEBATE IS HEALTHY!!! Hateful, Negative Attitudes Are Not!!!

Original Poster: To you male MUA'S, what made you want to do makeup? I'm curious.....

    • Jennifer James: Hey all, I would be interested to see if males are motivated differently than females or are the variances based more on individual life stories vs gender. Weigh in guys!

Original Poster: Thank you Jennifer J. I can't wait to see either

    • Commenter #1: I am also curious...because some of them it seem to come so natural to them & they can paint circles around some female artist

Commenter #2: Ths question deserves a *bump*!

    • Original Poster: bump....

      Commenter #3:
where are the men???? why no response

    • Commenter #4: sigh no one wants to answer? Im curious to know too because I agree with Commenter #1

    • Jennifer James: Hmm, is it that they're better or is it that as a culture, we are socialized to have more of a fascination with the Male Stylist???

Plus, the factor of that underlying crush women have on their Male Stylists even though the women really know it may not/won't ever go anywhere beyond the client/stylist relationship.

Does time enduring global sexism that exists in every world culture have anything to do with the successes of Male Master Artists & Craftsmen in many different fields?

I love the psychology behind this whole discussion.

Commenter #4: Its just my opinion before I join this forum I noticed more male artist than female. I knew it was female artist before just didnt know it was as many.

    • Original Poster: Psychology is my thing, I love it!

Commenter #5: oooow weee!! we definitely have a fascination and an endearing trust towards male artists. Simply put: A woman will sit in a chair and let a male say "Chile, you look a mess! let me fix you". Now IF a woman says that... well if a verbal altercation doesn't ensue, you can be sure that the woman will NOT return for services. I have seen women flirting and crushing on male artists to sickening extremes lol ready to give up house and home to pay for the service. Yes, it's that deep. Especially when the same client type will nickel and dime a woman for a stellar services worth just as much as the male counterpart.

    • Commenter #1: I always wondered if their drive to be the best in their art form was because they were men...meaning this is a "women" driven field and if they are going to do it they have to be better than the women doing it...not saying that all men artist are the bomb...but i have met some mind blowing talented artist...MUA/Hair/Styling *if.any.of.that.made.sense* LOL

    • Original Poster:  Your statement made me think of how ''extra'' MOST gay men tend to be... since they aren't naturally women, they feel the need to prove themselves more. Sooo, I do believe to an extent, male mua's do try to go that extra mile to be better than some women mua's.

Commenter #6: I recently had this discussion with another male MUA. This belief by women that male MUA/Hairstylist/Stylists are better than women and more preferred. I believe there is a correlation between this and the mother/son relationship. A mother loves her children, but has that special bond with her baby boy(mama's boy). Just like 'daddy's little girl'. The whole opposite attracts idea applies in this area as well. The affirmation by a man given to a woman is powerful. Some women may be lonely, rejected, etc. Attention from a male is what she is seeking, no matter the circumstance. So while a female Artist may be just as qualified or even better, a male will be chosen because of these things. This is my theory, what do you all think?

    • Jennifer James: ‎   Original Poster, there is another mis-conception that you just confirmed the existence of...A lot of gay men want to be women - F A L S E!

    • Jennifer James: Hi Commenter #6, I believe those things probably do play into it as well.

    • Commenter #1: oooh Original Poster, that wasnt the direction I was going...LOL...because some are not gay...they just want to take advantage of this billion dollar industry (all.things.women) but okaaay :-)

    • Original Poster: Jennifer James..............A lot that I know do have feminine ways, and try to be like women. That's why I made sure to say MOST.

    • Original Poster: and Commenter #1... I comprehended what you were saying, I was just stating my own opinion.

    • Original Poster: Another thing Jennifer James...... the fact is, most male mua's are gay that I know of, because they are open about it. It's not just an assumption, so please don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to turn this simple question I posted, into a political debate.

Commenter #1: ‎:-) I just know sometime I type what I think Im saying but when some read it they see something different then what I meant...again *if.that.made.sense* LOL

Original Poster: i feel you Commenter #1 :-)

    • Jennifer James:
      ‎Original Poster,  you said:
"Your statement made me think of how ''extra'' MOST gay men tend to be... since they aren't naturally women, they feel the need to prove themselves more. Sooo, I do believe to an extent, male mua's do try to go that extra mile to be better than some women mua's."

That sounds as if you are equating being gay with wanting to "be a woman" or in the least you seem to insinuate the 'most' do?

If that's not what you meant then maybe you could reword it to express your actual thought.

    • Original Poster: it's my opinion, i don't need to reword anything....

Original Poster: I guess this post won't go into the direction that i intended for it to go, so i'll just remove it!

Commentary:

We can't go through life & erase times & situations that don't go as we suspect or wish.

We learn from them, we build stronger character in ourselves & sometimes we give someone else something to think about & learn from.

I say it often, debate is healthy.

*About Skype in the classroom...

Skype in the classroom is a free global community that invites teachers to collaborate on classroom projects where they might use Skype, and share skills and inspiration around specific teaching needs.

Teachers all over the world are using Skype to make learning more exciting and memorable. It's easy to see why: Skype offers an immediate way to help students discover new cultures, languages and ideas, all without leaving the classroom.
One of the most inspiring examples we’ve come across is teacher Kara Cornejo’s global weather project, (click link to view video on the Skype in the Classroom website) which started here on Skype in the classroom.
